Denpasar ( Berita ) : Indonesia was vulnerable to natural disasters especially those triggered by global warming and climate change, an official said Floods were the most frequent in Indonesia accounting for 34 percent, and landslines16 percent of the total disasters in the country, chairman of Center for Environtmental Management for Bali and Nusa Tenggara region, Ir Sudirman MM, said here Tuesday.
“In fact, people have been worrying that global warming and climate change might contribute to dryness and heavy rains,” he said. Moreover, the chairman said that such natural disasters could lead to bigger climate disasters.
For three years (2003-2005), he said, Indonesia had recorded 1,429 natural disasters with 53.3 percent triggerd by hydro-meteorological factors. Sudirman, citing reports from the Ministry of Maritime and Fishery Affairs, said that from 2005 to 2007, Indonesia had lost 24 small islandsdue to elevated sea levels.
The small islands are spread in Aceh (three), North Sumatera (three), Papua (three , Riau (five),West Sumatra two), South Sulawesi(one) and the Thousand Isislands (seven). ( ant )
